Update: Arrests for sale of babies in Vietnam
May 7th, 2008 by Holly Fox
Six Vietnamese have been arrested by Chinese authorities for allegedly taking part in a baby-selling ring. Time reports the arrests here. As I blogged about several days ago, Vietnam has stopped permitting U.S. couples to adopt Vietnamese babies, after a U.S. embassy report alleged that its adoption system was rife with corruption and baby-selling.
Across the world in Guatemala, authorities have ordered a month-long pause in foreign adoptions altogether. According to this New York Times article, this will affect 2,300 adoptions already in process. Whether or not Vietnam will change its policy after the arrests remains to be seen.
